Have you ever thought about which surnames should be considered common in turn-of-the-century Hungary? Well, the massive volume of surnames (over 100,000) in the Industry and trade directory of Hungary in 1891 might give a solid base for an investigation like this, as far as professionals and shopkeepers are concerned.

Most of the surnames have several alternative spellings. Since without them the survey could not provide accurate results, I took the tedious task of compiling surname variations.

Here is a small summary of the figures:
- There are almost 900 surnames that, together with their alternative spellings, have more than 50 hits in the database, respectively.
- These 900 surnames have some 6000 surname variations.
- The number of records with these surnames and their variations is approx. 173,000. This means that common surnames cover almost half of the records (46%).

Although I have tried to do my best, there are probably omissions of alternative spellings. If you discover some, please let me know.

If you would like to see the results in details follow the links below. To enable easy searching of common names in the database I have included custom queries. Click on them to see the map and read the text about the distribution of frequent surnames.
